Election-officials group on lookout for new leader

The president of the Ohio Association of Election Officials is resigning her position early after retiring from her job as deputy director of the Lorain County Board of Elections.

Marilyn Jacobcik said she had planned to retire from the Lorain board after the association's January conference, but the board is imposing layoffs and pay cuts. She said her departure now will allow one of the board's staff members to keep working.

"At the end of the day, I determined that I could not see one of our people lose his job when I could prevent it," Jacobcik said in a statement.

Discussion is under way about who should replace Jacobcik for the rest of the year until the association's vice president, Jeannette Mullane, director of the Stark County Board of Elections, takes over.

Association rules require that a Democrat and Republican alternate as president, so the expectation is that a Republican will be picked to replace Jacobcik, a Republican, until Mullane, a Democrat, takes over next year.
